Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)
Generative engine optimization makes your business easier for AI tools to understand, trust and cite, by tightening your entity data, citations, structured content and llms.txt, then tracking whether AI answers change.
What's included
- An entity audit: how consistently your name, category, services, area and contact details appear across the web
- Organization and LocalBusiness schema that states those facts in a machine-readable form
- Citation cleanup and new listings on the directories and industry sites AI answers tend to draw from
- Content restructured into clear, self-contained answers, definitions, comparisons and lists
- Named, specific facts on your pages in place of vague marketing language
- An llms.txt file summarizing your key pages for AI crawlers
- A crawler access check so AI and search bots aren't blocked by accident
- Monthly tracking of mentions and citations in generative AI answers
What generative engine optimization is
Generative engines are AI tools that write an answer instead of showing a list of links: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Google's AI Overviews. When someone asks one of them "What should I look for in a commercial roofing contractor?" or "Which pediatric dentists near Plano take new patients?", the tool pulls information from pages, listings and reviews it trusts, then summarizes it, sometimes naming businesses and linking to sources.
Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is the practice of making your business a clear, reliable input to that process. It rests on three ideas:
- Consistent entity data. AI systems piece together who you are from many sources. When they all agree on your name, category, services and location, you are easier to describe accurately.
- Presence in trusted sources. Answers draw on sources the tool already relies on: well-known directories, industry sites, reviews and pages that rank well in search.
- Content that can be lifted. Pages with clear definitions, specific facts and self-contained answers are easier to summarize and quote than pages full of general slogans.
GEO doesn't replace search engine optimization. It adds a layer of attention to how machines read, combine and restate what exists about your business.
Who it's for
GEO suits businesses whose customers do research before they buy, and whose details are scattered or inconsistent online. Typical clients include:
- Service businesses that moved, rebranded or added locations, leaving old details spread across the web
- Professional firms and clinics whose sites describe services in vague terms that give AI tools little to work with
- Specialist companies whose customers ask comparison and "how to choose" questions before hiring
- Businesses already doing well in Google that want their information to carry over accurately into AI answers
- Companies in technical or regulated fields, where an AI summary that gets a detail wrong could mislead a customer
It is a weaker fit for a brand-new business with no reviews, listings or content yet. Generative engines need something to draw on, so the first job there is building a basic presence through local citation building and solid service pages. GEO then refines what exists.
If you haven't checked your AI visibility at all yet, our broader AI SEO services page explains the starting assessment.
How we do it
- 1
1. Measure the starting point
Our AI search visibility tracking runs a set of your customers' questions through the major AI tools and records whether you are mentioned, which sources are cited and which competitors appear. This baseline shapes every later step.

2. Audit your entity data
We compare how your business is described on your website, your Google Business Profile, major directories and industry listings: name, category, address, phone, service area, services and hours. Every mismatch is logged and fixed at the source where we have access, or listed for you where only you do.
- 3
3. State the facts in structured data
We generate and add Organization or LocalBusiness markup, Service markup and FAQ markup where it fits, then confirm it with schema validation. Structured data gives machines an unambiguous version of the facts on your pages, including links to your official profiles so your business is recognized as one entity.

4. Strengthen your presence in trusted sources
Answers often cite the same kinds of places: established directories, trade associations, local publications and review platforms. Using the sources that appear in your baseline, we build or correct listings and pursue mentions on sites relevant to your field, through the same honest outreach we use for link building.
- 5
5. Restructure key content
We revise your core pages so each starts with a direct answer, uses specific facts (service areas by name, what's included, what affects price), and breaks longer topics into clearly labeled sections, comparisons and short lists. This helps readers first, and it also makes your content easier for a generative engine to summarize correctly.
- 6
6. Publish llms.txt and check crawler access
We create an llms.txt file, a plain-text guide to your most important pages. We also check your robots.txt and server settings to make sure you aren't unintentionally blocking the crawlers that AI and search companies use, and we talk through the choice with you if you would rather limit access.
llms.txt file - 7
7. Track and refine
Each month we rerun the question set through AI search visibility tracking and compare mentions, citations and descriptions with the baseline, then adjust priorities. If a particular source keeps appearing in answers for your market, it moves up the list. If a content change seems to have made no difference after a fair period, we try a different approach rather than repeat it.
AI search visibility tracking
What you receive
You receive a baseline GEO report in the first month covering your AI visibility, the entity audit with every inconsistency found, the sources AI answers rely on in your market and a prioritized plan.
Each month after that you get:
- AI visibility tracking for the same question set, with mentions and citations compared with previous months
- A log of entity fixes, schema changes and listings created or corrected
- The content revisions made, with before and after notes
- Your current llms.txt file and any crawler setting changes
- Next month's priorities
Results depend on your market, competitors and how the AI tools themselves change, and the report says so plainly when little has moved. Where a fix needs your input, such as logging into a listing only you control, the report lists it at the top with simple instructions.

What is generative engine optimization in simple terms?
It is the work of making your business easy for AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews to find, understand and mention when they generate an answer. It builds on SEO but focuses on consistent facts, clearly structured content and presence in the sources those tools rely on.
Is GEO SEO a replacement for regular SEO?
No. Generative engines often draw on pages that already rank well and on trusted directories, so traditional SEO is the base that GEO sits on. Think of GEO as extra attention to how machines read and summarize your business, added to the work that helps you rank in normal results.
Can you make sure AI tools cite my website?
No. AI tools choose their sources in ways no outside company controls, and their answers change often. We improve the conditions that make citation more likely, such as accuracy, clarity and presence in trusted sources, and we measure the outcome honestly each month.
What is an entity, and why does it matter?
An entity is a distinct thing a machine can recognize, such as your business, a service or a place. AI systems build an understanding of your business by connecting facts about it from many sources. When those facts agree, the picture is clear; when your name, address or services differ from site to site, the picture blurs.
Do I need to rewrite my whole website for GEO?
Rarely. Most sites need targeted changes: clearer opening answers on key pages, specific facts in place of vague claims, a few comparison or FAQ sections and proper schema. We prioritize the pages that describe your core services and the questions customers ask most.
How do you measure GEO results?
We run a fixed set of customer questions through AI tools every month and record whether your business is mentioned, whether your site is cited as a source and how you are described. Because individual answers vary, we look at trends across the whole set rather than single responses.
