Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)
Answer engine optimization shapes your content around the exact questions customers ask, so your business has a clear, quotable answer ready for featured snippets, voice assistants and AI chat.
What's included
- Question research: the who, what, how much, how long and which-is-better questions your buyers search
- A check of which of your target searches show featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes and AI Overviews
- Short, direct answers written for the top of each relevant page
- New or expanded FAQ sections on your service pages, built from real questions
- Question-led headings and lists or tables where a question calls for steps or comparisons
- FAQPage, Service and LocalBusiness schema where the content supports it
- Google Business Profile Q and A and details checked for voice search answers
- Monthly tracking of snippets, People Also Ask placements and AI answer mentions
What answer engine optimization means
Search is increasingly a question followed by one answer. Google shows a featured snippet above the results, a People Also Ask box expands into short answers, a voice assistant reads a single response aloud, and AI tools write a paragraph that may or may not mention you. Each of these "answer engines" rewards the same thing: a page that answers the specific question directly, accurately and in a format that is easy to lift.
Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is the work of finding those questions and making sure your site has the best answer to each one.
Who it's for
AEO fits businesses whose customers arrive with questions before they arrive with a purchase:
- Home service companies whose buyers ask "how much does it cost to replace a water heater" or "do I need a permit for a deck"
- Clinics, dentists and therapists whose patients ask about procedures, recovery and insurance
- Law, tax and financial firms whose clients ask "how long does probate take in Ohio" or "what happens if I miss the filing deadline"
- Retailers and online stores whose shoppers ask "which is better" and "what size do I need"
- Any business that answers the same five questions on the phone every day
A common situation: you already rank well, but a competitor's answer sits in the featured snippet above you, or your service pages never appear in People Also Ask. Another: your pages are full of good information, but it is buried in long paragraphs that no answer engine would quote. Both are fixable with focused, page-level work rather than a whole new site.
How we do it
- 1
1. Research the questions
We gather the questions around your services from search data, People Also Ask boxes, related searches and what AI tools are asked about your field. Then we add the questions you and your staff hear every week. The result is a list grouped by service and by stage: early research, comparison and ready to book.
- 2
2. Map the answer formats
Search feature tracking shows which of your target searches display a featured snippet, a People Also Ask box, an AI Overview, a map pack or video results, and which site currently holds each spot. That tells us where an answer opportunity exists and what format it takes: a paragraph, a numbered list, a table or a short definition.

3. Write the answers
For each priority question, we write a concise answer of a few sentences that responds to the question in its first line, then expand below it with detail, examples and local specifics. Where Google shows a list, the answer becomes a list. Where it shows a table, we build a comparison. Answers are written to be accurate first; if the honest answer is "it depends", we say what it depends on.
- 4
4. Place answers where they belong
Answers go on the page that should own them: cost questions on the service page, process questions in a step-by-step section, broader questions in a guide or blog post. We add FAQ sections to service pages, rewrite headings as the questions people type, and connect related answers with internal links.
- 5
5. Add structured data
We add FAQPage, Service and LocalBusiness markup that matches what is visible on each page, and check it with schema validation. It won't produce a special look in Google for most sites, but it gives search engines and AI tools an unambiguous version of your answers and business details.

6. Cover voice and AI answers
We check your Google Business Profile, including hours, services and Q and A, since voice assistants often draw local answers from it. AI search visibility tracking then checks whether AI tools use your content or mention your business when asked your priority questions.

7. Track and improve
Each month we check which snippets and People Also Ask spots you hold, which you have gained or lost, and where AI answers mention you, then tighten the answers that are close.
What you receive
In the first month you receive your question map, grouped by service and buying stage, with the SERP features each question triggers and who currently holds them. You also get the list of pages we will update first and why.
Every month after that, your report includes:
- New and revised answers, with links to the pages they sit on
- Schema added or updated
- Featured snippets and People Also Ask placements held, gained and lost
- AI answer checks for your priority questions
- The next set of questions we plan to tackle
Snippets change often and outcomes depend on your competition, so we show you the real picture each month, not just the wins. You can send us new customer questions at any time by email, and we will add them to the map and tell you where each one fits.

What is answer engine optimization?
It is optimizing your content to be the direct answer to a question, wherever that answer is shown: a featured snippet at the top of Google, a People Also Ask box, a voice assistant's spoken reply or an AI chat response. It focuses on specific questions and clear answers rather than broad keywords.
How is AEO different from GEO?
They overlap. Answer engine optimization starts from individual questions and works on the page-level answers to them. Generative engine optimization works on how AI tools understand your business as a whole, through entity data, citations and structured content. Many businesses benefit from both, and we plan them together.
Will FAQ schema give me rich results in Google?
Probably not on its own. Google limited FAQ rich results in 2023 to a small set of well-known authoritative sites, so most businesses no longer see the expandable questions in search. We still add FAQ markup where it matches the page, because it states your answers clearly for machines, but we don't sell it as a visual feature.
Can you get my business into featured snippets?
We can't promise it. Google picks the snippet from pages it already ranks well, and it changes its choice often. What we do is make sure your page has the best short answer to the question, formatted the way the current snippet is, and track whether it wins the spot.
Does voice search matter for a small business?
For local questions, it can. Voice assistants tend to answer 'near me' and business questions from map listings and profiles, and general questions from featured snippets. That is why AEO includes checking your Google Business Profile details alongside your website content.
Where do the questions come from?
From search data, People Also Ask boxes, the questions AI tools answer about your field and, most usefully, from you. The questions customers ask on the phone and in your inbox are often the ones worth answering first.
